From The Indianapolis News, Saturday, August 5, 1916: Classic Irvington is preparing to link hands with frivolity when “Wonderland” opens Tuesday evening at Layman Ave. and Washington St. Sponsored by the Downey Avenue Christian Church Men’s Bible Class, the program features The Newsboys’ Band tootling tunefully while ex-mayor Lew Shank, auctioneer and vaudeville artist, draws a crowd. Kin Hubbard will offer original sketches; prizes will be awarded for the prettiest baby; and the handsomest man contest is a handicap race, in which competitors will have handicaps for weight and age. The Southern Men’s Quartet will sing, and if requested (and a request will be made) they will sing “Sweet Adeline.” A bunch of raucous barkers along with the crunch of peanuts and the swish of ice cream cones will help the Bible class raise a goodly sum for its charitable works.
