From The Indianapolis Star, Thursday, June 15, 1916: An immense crowd gathered at University Square yesterday to witness the ceremonies and hear patriotic speeches commemorating the 139th birthday of Old Glory. The crowd cheered and the band played the Star Spangled Banner as the beautiful silken folds of the Stars and Stripes unfurled from the top of a new flagpole erected on the north side of the park. A bunch of brilliantly-colored streamers fluttered beneath the flag in the damp wind as a clump of tiny silk flags fell to earth where children in the crowd mad a frantic scramble for them. Organized under the auspices of Eagles Lodge No. 13, the Flag Day events began with a parade that traversed downtown streets and swept around the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument before marching up Meridian Street to University Square.
