From The Indianapolis News, Tuesday, June 27, 1922: Mayor Lew Shank today signed the ordinance annexing Broad Ripple to the city of Indianapolis thereby adding $3,000,000 (2021: $50,374,618) in property valuation to the city’s tax base. Despite threats from remonstrators, Shank said, “Why shouldn’t Broad Ripple be annexed? The natural growth of Indianapolis is toward the north, and it is important that Broad Ripple be taken into the city. Most of the people out there favor annexation.” The mayor told a delegation of Broad Ripple businessmen that he would have the board of public works order the Indianapolis Street Railway Co extend the College Av line through the town and that he would do all in his power to see that Broad Ripple gets water, lights, gas, police, and fire protection. The city council passed the annexation ordinance last week.
