Community Service Awards Honor Local Unsung Heroes

INDIANAPOLIS — The Mayor’s Community Service Awards were recently presented at the Indianapolis Artsgarden. Dating back to 1992, the Mayor’s Community Service Awards has recognized Indianapolis residents who have volunteered their time and talents towards the betterment of Indianapolis and those who call it home. This year’s awards focused on the service of community members between March 2019 and March 2021. Each recipient will have their name engraved on individual bricks, which will be added to the Mayor’s Volunteer Plaza along the downtown canal.
Catina Anderson was honored for her contributions to accessibility and inclusion with her work through Central Indiana Association of Black Social Workers. Linda Bauknecht of the Marion County 4-H won the award for youth education. Jarnell Burks-Craig of the Minority Health Coalition of Marion County was honored for health care contributions.
Garry Elder of the Damien Center was honored for contributions to accessibility and inclusion. Beverley Katterhenry of the Speedway Trails Association was honored for her work with improving neighborhoods. Brenda McAtee was also honored for her work with the Norwood Neighborhood Assocation and SEND.
Steve and Jennifer Sanner were notef for their volunteered their time to orchestrate the laundry operations for the 68 visiting teams during March Madness and other sports contributions. Jason Shaw of the November Project Indy for inclusion and accessibility to fitness. Bill Walters’ work for Pike Youth Soccer Club was noted for his contribution to youth sports.
Kelly Wensing was honored posthumously for her work with the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association for her numerous contributions to education, neighborhood improvement, and the Eastside Games. Kelly passed away in April 2021.
