Applause!: July 23-29

•  Congratulations on the many local breweries that were recognized for outstanding contributions at the Indiana Brewer’s Cup. Metazoa Brewing Co. on South College took home the Brewery of the Year trophy, as well as the Grand Champion Brewery of the year. Other locals, including Center Point, Black Acre, and Triton Brewing took home many honors for their pints.
• Thanks go out to all the volunteers and organizers of this year’s Benton House Book Sale. Despite a rainy start, the book sale was the biggest ever — in terms of how many books were donated, as well as the number of them that went into reader’s hands Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
• Poetry Gathering for Arts for Lawrence and The Poets Laureate of Lawrence will hold their monthly reading at the newly renovated Theater at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave. on July 27 at 7:30 p.m. (Please come to the plaza entry of the theater addition on the east side of the building.) This month’s featured poet is Norbert Krapf.
• Indy Shorts International Film Festival runs throug July 25, with many excellent short films available streaming online or at in-person screenings at the Indianapolis Arts Center in Broad Ripple and the Living Room Theaters in the Bottleworks complex downtown. • Garfield Park offers a Pops Series at the MacAllister Amphitheater on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Upcoming acts including the Indianapolis Municipal Band on July 28 and the Crossroads Brass Band on Aug. 4. Visit gpacarts.org for more information. Events may be cancelled due to weather.
• The Irvington Historical Society’s Ice Cream Social returns Saturday, Aug. 1 from noon-4 p.m. at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, 5350 University Ave. This year’s event will be extra-special as the “Madge” exhibit opens at the Bona Thompson, and there will be a small artisan fair on the grounds. Downey St. in front of the Bona will be closed to traffic, so plan your routes accordingly.
• The Blues, Beer and BBQ event in Cumberland will be held Saturday, July 31, featuring Four Day Ray Brewing, free music by Gordon Bonham and Harper & Midwest Kind from 6-10 p.m. at 11623 E. Washington St. Nine food trucks and other brew options will also be available.
• 10th St. will closed at nights July 23-Aug. 6 (weather depending) at St. Clair St.  Construction crews will be there from 7 p.m.-5 a.m. and traffic will be diverted to 16th St.
• Classical Music Sundays at the Theater at the Fort will feature Four Violins on Sunday, July 25 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the theater, 8920 Otis Ave. Admission is free.
