From The Indianapolis Star, Thursday, April 14, 1921: Nearly 11,000 baseball fans attended the opening game at Washington Park yesterday afternoon to see the Indianapolis Indians put over the winning 3 to 2 tally in the ninth inning against the Columbus Senators. The great game of thrills featuring spectacular fielding, fast work on the bases, timely hitting, and first-class pitching was proceeded by a parade of decorated cars carrying Gov. Warren McCray, Mayor Charles Jewett, the Indianapolis baseball team, members of the Indianapolis Athletic Club along with members of various other clubs and amateur baseball clubs in uniform. Winding slowly through the downtown streets, the snappy motorcade made its way eventually west on Washington Street to the ballpark for the flag raising and other ceremonies before Mayor Jewett delivered the honorary first pitch to cries of “put ‘er over, Charlie.”
