IRVINGTON — The egg is a symbol of rebirth. With the addition of complex Ukrainian folk designs, the Easter egg becomes a true object of beauty. The art form is called Pysanka, from the verb pysaty, “to write,” as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax. In an exhibit opening Feb. 3, the Bona Thompson Memorial Center will display over 70 of these beauties created by the talented artist, Suzanne Walker. These are true works of art on a small, curved, three dimensional canvas. Suzanne has been creating painted eggs since she was 12 and her passion and intensity can been seen in her intricate designs. Visit her Web site at www.pysanky.net/
If the vivid colors and intricate designs encourage you to make your own heirloom egg, Suzanne will offer a class on Sat., March 10 from 1-4 at the Bona Thompson. Cost is $15 and includes all supplies. Registrants must be over the age of 14. Class is limited to 16.
