100 Years Ago: Dec. 8-14

From The Indianapolis News, Friday, December 14: As the John Philip Sousa Great Navy Band played “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the meeting at Tomlinson Hall yesterday afternoon, every man in that great crowd stood with bared head except a few members of the Indianapolis police department who stood arrogantly in an unpatriotic attitude. These men in uniform failed to remove their hats or even to salute. Police Chief James F. Quigley said, “I am surprised that the men did not uncover and stand at attention or salute. I thought that all the policemen understood this to be their patriotic duty. So that there will be no misunderstanding in the future, I will issue a general order today that all policemen shall take off their hats and stand at attention wherever they may be when ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ is played.”
