World War I 100 Years Ago: May 26-June 1

From The Indianapolis News, Friday, June 1: Anti-conscription agitation in Indianapolis today became the object of investigation by the United States Marshal and agents of the Secret Service and the Department of Justice. Many reports of anti-draft activities were investigated during the day, but no arrests were made. A wary eye was cast by government agents on an anti-conscription meeting held last night at Morrison Hall, 52½ Monument Circle, by forty men and women. Speeches at the meeting of “Conscientious Objectors to War” were mild, and federal officers examined leaflets and pamphlets but no literature was confiscated. Every person who attended the meeting, it was learned from government officials, will be subject to future attention. One agent declared, “It is time that some of these persons who are against the government should be taught to respect its laws.”
