From The Indianapolis News, Monday, September 18, 1916: Indiana University will offer extension courses in Indianapolis beginning October 9. The state university has adopted a definite policy of serving the people of Indiana who cannot go to Bloomington without in any way weakening its standards of scholarship. A wide range of studies will be offered by twenty-eight faculty members in classes that will be held in the Chamber of Commerce Building and Shortridge High School. In addition to literary courses and courses in sociology, economics, political science, and history, classes adapted to the needs of the business world – accounting and business correspondence – will be offered. Joseph W. Piercy, formerly of The News, will give a course in advertising and journalism. Business men and teachers are the two main groups who have shown interest in the Indiana University extension classes.
