From The Indianapolis Star, Friday, April 21: Nine of the sixty Indianapolis public schools are unsafe and insanitary according to a report made public by buildings commissioner Jacob H. Hilkene. In examining the schools from cellars to attics, many deplorable conditions were found especially with the boys’ and girls’ washrooms where privacy is almost unknown. In some schools there are no fire escapes; many doors enter inward instead of outward. At Manual Training High School crowded conditions require two students to occupy a single seat during a portion of the day and the basement dining rooms are dark and filled with fumes from the gas ranges. Volatile materials are not properly stored; rubbish and trash are found in cloakrooms. A complete report of all school buildings will be given to the school board at its next regular meeting.
