World War 1 100 Years Ago: Feb. 26-March 3

Representatives of European nations are negotiating contracts with food manufacturers in Indianapolis and vicinity to supply canned meats and vegetables for consumption by the Allied forces in the trenches of France and Flanders. If the contracts are signed, as expected, Indianapolis will become one of the largest food supply points in the country, providing one million cans a week in specially prepared military rations. The size of the war order has made it necessary for The American Canning Co., Swift & Co., and T. J. Polk & Co. to combine interests to secure the contracts. While the manufacturing center will be the Polk plant at Greenwood, the weekly production of a million cans of rations would tax this plant’s capacity so other plants in Kentucky and Illinois will also be used.
