INDIANAPOLIS — Film historian Eric Grayson will screen a selection of home movies and newsreels of the 1933-34 Chicago World’s Fair, the “Century of Progress,” at Garfield Park Arts Center, 2432 Conservatory Dr., on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.
The program will round out the 2015 monthly Vintage Movie Nights at Garfield Park. According to Grayson, home movies had become popular by 1934, so it was possible to take your own films or even hire a cinematographer to document a corporate outing. Included in the screening will be the Sinclair dinosaur exhibit and footage of Sally Rand, notorious for her fan dance and bubble dance. (In spite of Ms. Rand, this Vintage Movie Night selection is, as always, family-friendly.)
The offerings are from Grayson’s large collection of rare films and shorts. The home movies will be accompanied by commentary by Grayson and historian/author Glory-June Greiff. Greiff will also have on display her large collection of Chicago World’s Fair memorabilia. A 2014 Vintage Movie Night featured footage from the fair; the December 19 program, brought back by popular demand, includes newly acquired films.
