From The Indianapolis Star, Friday, November 6, 1914: The time for receiving donations for the “Christmas Ship” has elapsed. The various toys and other articles are packed and soon the last shipment will be sent to New York. Hoosiers may be assured when the ship reaches the other side of the Atlantic that their kindly contributions will shed many a ray of sunshine on an otherwise dreary Christmas, and that many little tots, whose fathers are away at war, will at least have some warm clothing and a few toys to make them happy on Christmas morning. Cash contributions received at The Star amounted to $144.25 (2013: $3,306.86) and the Hibben, Hollweg & Co has provided children’s clothing at cost or less. Indianapolis and 112 other American cities responded to the movement to help the children of Europe.
