From The Indianapolis Star, Wednesday, October 21, 1914: More than $400 (2013: $9,169.79) was given in cash in the Jewish Community Building, 17 W. Morris St, last evening as a result of the plea made by Jacob DeHass of Boston, one of the leaders of the Zionist movement. The money is to be used to maintain the Zionist colonies in Palestine. There are now 40,000 Jews in Palestine, and heretofore they have depended upon the exports and contributions from foreign Jews to keep their community going. Since the mobilization of the Turkish army, many young Jews in Palestine have been called to the front and many horses, cattle and much gold confiscated. “There are now 500,000 Jewish soldiers in the field, and this means hundreds of thousands will be left destitute” said DeHass.
