• Polar vortex 2.0 anyone? Quit whining! Remember January 19, 1994 when the temperature dove to -27 Fahrenheit? And just think, in about six months you’ll think it’s too hot.
• With all the freezing and thawing, potholes are blooming everywhere. To report potholes in Beech Grove, call 803-9091 or contact mayorscallcenter@beechgrove.com. Give the closest address to where the pothole is located.
• A GOP caucus in Greenfield appointed Chuck Fewell to the mayor’s position on Dec. 30. Fewell is a graduate of Howe High School, and has been living in Greenfield since 1998. He takes the place of Dick Pasco, who passed away Dec. 10.
• A postal rate increase will hit after Jan. 25. A first-class stamp will be 49 cents.
• The Post Holiday Recycling Event has been rescheduled for Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Materials accepted will be electronics and electrical appliances (anything with a cord), corrugated cardboard, and molded foam packaging. The four drop-off locations will be Ellenberger, Broad Ripple, Krannert ,and Perry Parks. Please note Perry Park as the location for the south side. • Having trouble paying your heating bills? The Winter Assistance Fund is for Marion County residents whose income exceeds guidelines for government energy assistance, yet still have difficulty keeping up with high winter heating bills. Last year, the fund helped 2,253 individuals stay warm. Residents may dial 2-1-1 to find the nearest neighborhood community center or township trustee office accepting Winter Assistance Fund applications.
• Q Artistry will begin their Emerging Playwrights Series Jan. 31 with Without A Spot or Wrinkle by Tiffanie Bridges, then Fishing with Seymour Drosty by Jordan Lyons on Feb. 1, and God and the Machine by Maureen O’Leary also on Feb. 1. Shows will rotate through until Feb. 15 and will be at the Lodge, 5515 E. Washington St. Tickets are $7-$10, depending on if you buy multiples. Visit qartistry.org for ticket information. • The Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission continued the petition for variances for Black Acre to brew its beers on Bonna Ave. to the Feb. 5 meeting. Meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Public Assembly Room on the second floor of the City-County Building. If you support Black Acre’s expansion, please mark your calendar and show up for this meeting.
• Irvington resident Anne Shaw Moore’s home will be featured on the PBS program “Ask This Old House” on Jan. 25 on WFYI-Channel 20. The segment is on installing hard-wired smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check local listings for airing time.
