INDIANAPOLIS — As the 2016 bicentennial of the state of Indiana approaches, residents are urged to learn about their pioneer ancestors and how to honor them for helping to settle this state. If you had ancestors in Indiana by 1840 (or a few years later in a few northern counties) or if you are simply interested in state history, consider joining The Society of Indiana Pioneers.
Through the Society, you can add your family history to society records, so your background is never lost or forgotten. You may be able to learn more about your own family in the Society’s archives of over 8,500 individual pioneers. By joining, you can take part in activities planned to celebrate the 200th anniversary of our state in 2016.
In the Society you can discover more about local history on tours to state historical sites and can help promote education and research about Indiana history through the society’s awards to grade schools, graduate fellowships, historical markers, programs and publications. You can enjoy friendships with others interested in preserving Hoosier history for current and future generations.

Membership includes newsletters, yearbook, help with genealogical research, annual program and opportunity to join field trips to historical sites, as well as plans for special events in Indiana’s bicentennial year 2016.
