INDIANAPOLIS — Peace Learning Center (PLC) is seeking volunteers and support for its Koinonia Project, a beautification service opportunity for youth and adults, that will empower more than 200 children and youth to participate in the revitalization of Indianapolis’ east side. Koinonia is a Greek word meaning “share and give,” “joint participation,” “coming together to propel the community forward” and “common unity.”
The project will include teams of youth and adults cleaning up stretches of road from the intersection at E. 38th Street and N. Franklin Road to an intersection at E. 38th Street and N. Mitthoeffer Road, as well as from the intersection at E. 42nd Street and N. Franklin Road to an intersection at E. 42nd Street and N. Mitthoeffer Road. Local artists LaToya Marlin, Derrock Burnett, Gary Gee and Andre Parnell will also be painting traffic boxes based on designs submitted by youth, grades 2nd to 12th, from local schools.
March 24th through March 26th will be dedicated to the project. Registration will begin each day from 8:00 – 8:45 a.m. Participants will receive work gloves, tools, and their assigned work group with location at registration. Clean-up will begin at 9:00 a.m. and break at noon for a free lunch provided to volunteers. Clean-up will resume at 1:00 p.m. and close at 3:00 p.m. each day.
Adult volunteers are needed to lead groups of youth during the project and youth are needed to be project participants. People interested in volunteering or financially supporting the project can learn more at peacelearningcenter.org/koinonia. In the case of bad weather the event will be postponed and rescheduled for a later date.
