From The Indianapolis News, Monday, November 23, 1914: The Fighting Butler Eleven holds an absolute clear title to the Secondary State Championship by reason of its 6 to 0 victory over Franklin in the last game of the season before one of the largest crowds ever seen on Irwin Field. The greatest football celebration in the history of the Irvington school followed Saturday evening with a mammoth bonfire built on campus with everything available thrown into the fire. Over 500 persons took part in the revelry with yells and songs. When the fire died down, the merrymakers paraded in the streets of Irvington. President Howe later received the ball used in the game as a trophy of the team’s victory. It was inscribed, “Secondary Champions 1914” with a record of the season in game scores.
