INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) marked the completion of construction on the final phases of the Pogue’s Run Greenway. The expansion was part of the third phase of Circle City Forward Initiative, marking a $7.2 million investment in the city’s greenways network.
The trail runs along the city’s Near Eastside, starting at 10th Street near Arsenal Technical High School and stretching more than five miles to the northeast, running through Brookside and Spades Parks and ending at Pogue’s Run Art and Nature Park. This construction brought multiple improvements to the corridor — including a 100-foot pedestrian bridge, bike lanes, and ADA-compliant ramp upgrades.
The ACEC Merit Award-winning greenway is well known for its unique feature: glow stone paved into the asphalt. The stones dotting the pavement allow the trail to glow in the dark, making low-light and nighttime travel easier for trail-goers. This luminous innovation pays homage to the former road it replaces, which once incorporated colorful glass from a nearby factory, and the park’s beloved “Feast of Lanterns” festival, where glowing lanterns light up the community.
Completion of these new sections of the Pogue’s Run Greenway also marks the completion of another section of the City’s 2014 Greenways Full Circle Master Plan. Several trails have been constructed or expanded over the past several years, including last year’s opening of the Nickel Plate Trail and the Interurban Trail, now being built on Indianapolis’ south side.
