INDIANAPOLIS — DC Blox has proposed building a data center at the old Ford Visteon site. In July, they received approval from the Metropolitan Development Commission (MDC) for a use variance that allows them to build, despite opposition from many who live nearby. Councilor Michael-Paul Hart (R- District 20) who represents the area for the data center introduced two tax abatement proposals for DC Blox totaling $113 million in personal and real property tax relief. Because the proposed development site is in the Irvington-Brookville TIF district, it must be approved by the full City-County Council.
As part of any tax abatement deal, the City requires that the developer provide funding that can be used for a variety of projects that benefit the community. While the final details of DC Blox’s proposed community benefit package are not yet complete, Councilor Hart has shared that nearly $6M would be used to support the demolition of Washington Square mall..
Councilor Andy Neilson (D-District 14) has noted that neighbors have been resolute in their opposition to the project, and that he does not believe that the proposed tax abatement is in the best interest of the community.
The proposal will be heard by the Metropolitan and Economic Development Committee on Monday, Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the City-County Building, and will include an opportunity for public comment.
The proposal will then be voted on by the full City-County Council on Monday, Dec. 7. No public comments will be allowed at the meeting.
