As Spring has finally come, so too, have the young athletes stepped upon the fields of new green, green grass to run, jump, roll, throw, catch, and kick balls of various sizes and scrape knees and elbows in pursuit of athletic excellence and the enduring spirit of competition. For the first time, the Boss and I find ourselves the grandparents one of these athletes. Our 4 year old granddaughter, fondly known as the Ladybug is playing on an organized YMCA soccer team. That means of course that the Boss and I will be traveling to games, taking pictures, yelling our support from stands, hissing at the refs, sharing our life experiences and personal opinions with the coaches, springing for a post game victory celebration and all of those other things that grandparents do when they are supporting their grand-children’s athletic endeavors. It’s one of the great joys of being a grandparent and it makes you feel good down to your toes to see your grandkid out there in the mix having a wonderful time. So all of you grandpas and grandmas out there, do not be shy about sharing those stories and pictures of your grandkid’s home run hit, fast ball strikeout, kicking the winning goal, blazing tennis backhand, hitting the hole in one, or any the other sporting activities that they are involved in. It’s expected. It’s what we are supposed to do. I will be sharing the Ladybug’s soccer exploits with you from time to time and if you have a nice short story about your grandkid’s sporting achievement, share it with me.
