From The Indianapolis Star, Wednesday, August 11, 1926: Twenty-five hundred persons gathered last night on the lawn of the Prest-O-Lite Co to celebrate the recent incorporation of the town of Speedway and to hear from candidates vying for various town offices. The lawn was decorated with lanterns, refreshment booths served free drinks, and balloons were handed out to children. An orchestra played jazz for the Charleston contests. Candidates for the three ward trustees, clerk, and treasurer were given three minutes to make campaign speeches. Following the August 18 election, the new town council will appoint a town marshal, and county schools will be used, so there will be no need for a school board. The town of Speedway has a population of 500 people and covers 1,200 acres. Firefighting equipment will be supplied by the Prest-O-Lite Co and Allison Engineering.
