Ransburg YMCA Scheduled for Closure

INDIANAPOLIS — The YMCA Association Board of Directors has announced its decision to consolidate its services in the greater east side Indianapolis community, as well as consolidate its early learning programming. This step is necessary to secure long-term sustainability of YMCA services in central Indiana. Part of the decision includes closure of the Ransburg YMCA, effective March 31. YMCA leadership had been working to address ongoing financial challenges at that center and ultimately determined that closure was the only remaining path open. Ransburg YMCA has served the east side for nearly 70 years.
The YMCA will work closely with members at the Ransburg location to identify a new primary center. Several YMCA locations serve overlapping areas of the eastside — and in many cases, other centers are closer to where members live. However, there is an organized effort among some in the community to appeal to the board and find alternative funding to keep the doors open.
Due to external funding changes creating unsustainable financial pressure, the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis also decided to suspend early learning programs at the Baxter, Benjamin Harrison and Ransburg centers.
“The YMCA remains deeply committed to its members and the greater Indianapolis community,” said YMCA Association Board Chair Joe White. “We will work alongside community leaders to identify the best options for everyone who depends on the YMCA.”
