From The Indianapolis Times, Monday, September 25, 1922: Every type of building from a modern well equipped portable schoolhouse to a shack is being used to accommodate the overflow of Indianapolis school children unable to be housed in permanent buildings, and school officials admit the probability of erecting enough permanent structures to house these children within the coming years is extremely small. At Shortridge High School congestion is so great that pupils spend their study hours in Caleb Mills Hall where there are no desks or armchairs which makes it almost impossible to do any writing. All a pupil can do is hold a book and study. At Manual High School, classes are being held in rooms formerly used as cloakrooms, the students sitting and studying on folding chairs, while Technical High School is the most crowded school in Indianapolis.
