INDIANA — The Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) has received concerning reports of sick and dying songbirds in 53 counties, including Marion. The DNR is working with the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and the USGS National Wildlife Health Center to determine the birds’ cause of death.
The affected songbirds showed neurological signs of illness as well as eye swelling and crusty discharge. Several species are being affected, including robins, blue jays, grackles, cardinals, and starlings.

In addition, the DNR recommends removing bird feeders, including hummingbird feeders, until further notice. Feeders should also be cleaned before being stored. Bird baths should be emptied and cleaned with a 10% bleach solution. Keep pets away from sick or dead birds. Do not handle birds unless you are wearing disposable gloves.
