• It’s great to see more in-person events being planned by large and small organizations! Non-profits have been hit particularly hard by gathering restrictions over the past year, and have been unable to hold their big fundraising events, leading to the loss of thousands of dollars that would have supported their causes. If you are fully vaccinated, please consider attending. In Marion County, the mask mandate in public is still in effect, and social distancing is enforced, and the risk is minimal outdoors.
• Speaking of gatherings, MJ and the New Embers will be playing on the deck of the Irving Theatre building on Friday, May 21 from 7:30-10:00 p.m. Bring your own lawn chair, and bring food from one of the many local restaurants, or food from home, to enjoy at this free concert. Tips for the band would be greatly appreciated.
• Downtown Greenfield is looking beautiful, thanks to all the flowers that were recently planted by the city. Thanks to the volunteers who filled the flower beds and pots!
• The kick-off for the Fort Harrison State Park Summer Concert Series will be on Saturday, May 22 from 7-8 p.m. The concert is free with park admission. Bring your own blanket or lawn chair and settle in for some music from local bands on the sledding hill across from the Sycamore Shelter. Fort Harrison State Park is located in Lawrence, 6000 N. Post Rd. Normal gate fees apply ($7 per car with Indiana plates).
• The Poets Laureate of Lawrence will be meeting in person on Tuesday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. for a reading from poets who contributed to the first issue of their Literary Journal. The reading will be held at the Theater at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave. Audiences will be asked to wear masks; featured poets who are vaccinated can remove their masks during their reading.
• Hancock County Children’s Choir is offering Music Summer Camp on June 7 at the Brandywine Community Church in Greenfield. Students must be in grades 7-12. Register online at hancockcountychildrenschoir.regfox.com/hccc-summer-music-camp-2021
• The Original Farmer’s Market is open on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at City Market, 222 E. Market St. Vendors from Central Indiana sell fresh produce, cheese, and much more. Due to Market Street construction, this season’s market is located one block east on Market St. in between Alabama and New Jersey right off the Cultural Trail.
• The Wicket World of Croquet will return on Saturday, June 5 at 10 a.m., but will be played at White River State Park as the Harrison Presidential Site undergoes renovation. Dress up in your game whites and play croquet or just observe. CDC guidelines will be enforced. Tickets are $30-$150 and reservations must be made online at bhpsite.org/events/wicket-world-of-croquet-2021
