• There will be a Garage Sale in the Lodge in Irvington, Sunday, Jan. 19, from 1-4 p.m. The Lodge is located at 5515 E. Washington St. This won’t be your usual sale — it will be inside with tables of women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, small household items, decor and more. Bring two nonperishable food items to donate to the ICAN Food Pantry and enter for a drawing.
• All Indianapolis Public Libraries will be closed on Monday, January 20 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, except the InfoZone, which will be open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
• On Monday, Jan. 20, the U.S. Postal Service will observe the federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. All Post Offices in Indiana will be closed and there will be no mail delivery or retail service.
• All federal, state and local offices will be closed to observe MLK, Jr. Day. Residential trash and recycling pick-ups will not take place on Monday, and DPW will operate on a sliding schedule for the week.
• Indy Parks is offering MLK Day Winter Birds program at Southeastway Park, 5624 S. Carroll Rd. on Monday, Jan. 20 from 12:30-3:00 p.m. Join the naturalists at the park for free walk-in activities that include making pine cone bird feeders, learning bird songs, bird ID information, and winter bird crafts. No registration is needed for the program. Hang around and find out about their maple tapping events in February. If you haven’t been to this gem of a park, now is a good time to check it out!
• Adults and families are welcome at the Classical Concerts at Central Library on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. The event features chamber music with members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The library is located at 40 E. St. Clair.
• Upcoming neighborhood meetings: Spades Park, Monday, Jan. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Spades Park Library (1801 Nowland Ave.); Little Flower, Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church (4720 E. 13th St.); Otterbein, Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. at Otterbein UMC (5009 E. 21st St.).
• If you are interested in contributing to the Near Eastside Quality of Life Plan but can’t make it to a meeting, you might be able to make it to the coffee breaks they are having through the month at Rabble Coffee House on East 10th St. The next coffee breaks will be on Tuesday, Jan. 21 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 31 from 8 to 10 a.m. There’s no need to make an appointment, just walk in and look for the person with the Quality of Life sign.
• The Warren Central Winter Guards and Winter Percussion Ensembles will host a Community Preview Day on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. in the South Gym, with performances by the Cadet, JV, and World Guards, the Winter Percussion Ensemble, and the brand new Eastside Beat Cadet Percussion Ensemble. This is the only time that most of these groups will perform in Warren Township this season, so it’s a great opportunity to see them all at once. The school is located at 9500 E. 16th St. Admission is $6 at the door.
