INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Sergeant Matthew Steward has been awarded the Chancellor’s Medallion by IUPUI Chancellor Nasser Paydar. The Chancellor’s Medallion is the highest award bestowed to an individual by the university and recognizes the 50th anniversary of the university’s founding. Chancellor Paydar cited Matthew’s sustained effort to engage, educate, and move our community through thoughtful discussions and dialogue in a meaningful and impactful way by creating and sustaining the Steward Speakers Power Series as a reason for awarding Sergeant Steward the Chancellor’s Medallion.
Sergeant Steward was presented with the award during the Steward Speaker 32nd Lecture Series and dinner at the downtown JW Marriott featuring world renowned actress Phylicia Rashad on May 9. Phylicia Rashad is most notably known as Clair Huxtable on the long-running NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. He was not aware of the recognition, but was instead surprised at the event.
The Steward Speaker Power Series has three pillars: education, engagement, and experience. Sergeant Steward oversees the IMPD Community Resource District Council and has over 35 years of law enforcement experience.
The Steward Speaker Series has brought many accomplished speakers over the years, including former Attorney General Eric Holder and retired General Colin Powell. The 2019-2020 series has yet to be announced.
