Let me see if I have this straight. First came French Country, then Farm Fresh, followed by Farmhouse Chic and now for 2019 the top selling look is Rustic Glam.
While Rustic Glam may look a great deal like the farmhouse finds of the past few years, there are some striking differences. Still present are the weathered wood elements, chippy and distressed furniture and bright white, but added this year are the clean lines of architectural and industrial accents and lots of sparkle!
Glam decor and Farmhouse Chic have vied since 2016 for top honors in the field of home decor, causing one to feel it was only a matter of time until this fusion would evolve. So how do you tweak your current decor to accomplish this updated look? It may be easier than you think.
Wood furniture is a must and should be used in large doses to anchor your rooms. While your current stark white furniture will still be relevant, natural and reclaimed wood tables are an important part of your update. The addition of a work table or dining size harvest table gives your room a sense of sophistication that is the essence of Rustic Glam. To help your featured pieces blend try adding natural wood accessories like boxes, candlesticks and bookends. Remember those wonderful late 1800s primitive bowls that fell out of vogue a few years ago? They are back, stacked in graduating sizes or displayed individually filled with your favorite farm fresh collectibles.
The chicken stencils and farmer’s market signs of 2018 have given way to signage that expresses your personality. Heartwarming quotes and signs welcoming friends and acknowledging family are popular. Or, lean more towards the glamour side of the spectrum with a lit movie marquee sign or a quaint phrase written in elegant script. If vintage is your passion, go for a cluster of signs with an advertising theme.
There is plenty of room for DIY {Do It Yourself} projects in this area of decorating. The difference for 2019 is the blend of your homemade and craft projects with designer elements. If signage is your forte, then hang your “Home Sweet Home” hand-painted sign above an elegant white painted antique buffet in the dinning room or a classic Bernhardt sofa in the living room. This genre of decor is all about balance.
Sparkle and shine are a must! Metallic fabrics of gold and silver are one of the fastest ways to update to Rustic Glam. Here you may only need to visit your nearby fabric shop. It you are a pro at reupholstering, then go for it with a pair of arm chairs. However, if you are a novice (like most of us), you can accomplish the same effect by recovering your dining room chairs and making a few new cases for your throw pillows.
To the delight of many, 2019 is seeing the return of clear glass and crystal. Twenty-five years ago, boudoir lamps, candle holders and centerpiece bowls with crystal prisms were all the rage. If you stored yours in the attic, it is time to go get them out. If you opted to sell them in a garage sale not to worry, the antique malls and resale shops are full of them. Also be on the lookout for large glass vases in clear glass and shades of blues and greens, and if you are fortunate enough to stumble across a crystal chandelier at a yard sale . . . grab it!
Unlike the cluttered “farm” looks of past years, your finished product should be warm and streamlined with a touch of elegance. For a finishing touch add sprigs of boxwood, pussy willows and vases full of lavender and you are ready for Spring 2019! Until next time . . . Linda
