INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles reminds Hoosiers time is running out to upgrade to a Real ID before the October 1, 2020 deadline.
After October 1, 2020 the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require anyone wishing to board a domestic commercial flight to have a Real ID-compliant license, permit, state-issued identification card, or passport.
A Real ID-compliant license, permit, or identification card is a more secure form of identification which meets security standards established by federal legislation in 2005. Real ID is indicated by a star in the upper-right corner of a license, permit, or ID. Though the deadline for domestic commercial flights is approaching, some access restrictions related to Real ID already apply. Currently, individuals without a Real ID cannot enter some military bases and federal facilities.
To upgrade to a Real ID, customers must visit a BMV branch and provide documents proving their identity, Social Security number, lawful status in the U.S., and Indiana residency. Detailed information pertaining to Real ID and the documents required to upgrade can be found at REALID.in.gov
For a complete list of branch locations and hours, visit IN.gov/BMV/2415.
