• The Masquerade Ball March 2 supporting Coburn Place was a huge success. Jan and her team organized everything and it was a lot of fun. Thank you to all the hardworking volunteers and donors for supporting this important organization, and Gaia Works.
• The print edition of NUVO Newsweekly is no more. The last issue was distributed February 27, and most of the staff was let go. The newspaper business gets harder every year, and NUVO had a great 29 years. The publisher has transferred the newspaper’s assets to the nonprofit NUVO Cultural Foundation and is planning to continue online-only publication of investigative journalism.
• Warren Central Photography Club will have an opening reception March 9th from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, 5350 E. University. Come meet some of the young photographers. Some of the photographs will be for sale, with proceeds going to support the Warren Central Photography Club. The exhibit can be viewed Saturday/Sundays 1-4 p.m. or on Wednesdays 1-3 p.m. until the end of the month.
• Matthew’s Voices, an organization focused on providing a musical environment for the city’s most marginalized residents, will team up with VOCE, an organization for people who like to sing, for a “Take What You Need” concert Sunday, March 17 at 3 p.m. at Roberts Park United Methodist Church,401 N. Delaware. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door.
• The IMPD East District Task Force Meeting will be held Wednesday, March 13 at 6 p.m. at the district headquarters, 201 N. Shadeland. There will be a Narcan training and distribution during the meeting.
• On Tuesdays from 4-7 p.m., check out the Eastside Marketspace at 1125 E. Brookside Ave. for local food and bodycare items.
• The next Poetry at the Yard will be held Monday, March 18 from 6-10 p.m. at Coal Yard Coffee, 5547 Bonna Ave. in Irvington. Hosted by Jason Ammerman, this month features a poetry slam with a $100 grand prize. The first 12 to sign up get a spot on the line-up.
• The public is invited to offer suggestions for a new West Perry Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library during a series of community meetings on Wednesday, March 13 and on Thursday, April 11 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at the Meridian Woods Park Clubhouse, 6760 Yellowstone Parkway. The meetings will ask for comments on the design of the new $9.2 million branch to be located near Harding St. and Southport Rd. For more information, call 317-275-4012 or e-mail jhelling@indypl.org.
• Last year, Student Fellowship for Blacks, Inc. awarded $6,000 in scholarships to students attending Historical Black Colleges and Universities. Sandra Jones was awarded $3,000 and is attending Martin University; Lawrence L. Middleton was awarded $3,000 and attends Tuskegee University in Alabama. Potential donors should check out the Web site, studentfellowshipforblacks.org to find out how this organization has helped African-American students since 1978.
• The Auxiliary to Community Hospital East will sponsor a $5 Jewelry and Accessories Fundraising Sale on Sunday, March 17 from 7-10 p.m.; Monday, March 18 from 6:30 a.m.-9 p.m.; and Tuesday, March 19 from 6:30 a.m.-3 p.m. The sale will be held in the Community Hospital East Main Lobby, 1500 N.
