INDIANAPOLIS — Mayor Joe Hogsett announced recently that University Heights will be the City’s ‘Neighborhood of the Month’ for January, 2018. The Neighborhood of the Month initiative showcases the unique culture, history, and neighborhood groups that make Indianapolis special.
University Heights was established in 1902 when real estate developer William L. Elder offered eight acres of land to the Church of United Brethren in Christ to help establish a college. To this day, the community remains a home for students and residents alike, who all care for the area with organized efforts led by the University Heights Neighborhood Association.
University Heights, located on the south side of Indianapolis, is being highlighted this month as students return for another semester at the school that created the neighborhood: University of Indianapolis. Chartered in 1902 as Indiana Central University, the school adopted its current moniker in 1986, and now serves an average student population of close to 7,000 undergraduates and postgraduates.
