From The Indianapolis News, Saturday, October 27: A parade of several hundred used automobiles snorted and groaned and squeaked their way along the streets of downtown Indianapolis opening “Used Car Week.” Many cars of ancient vintage from the days when Elwood Haynes, Steven Duryea, the Appersons and Charles H. Black were the inventors and designers of the horseless carriage limped and smoked over the parade route. Few persons realized that the car snorting along in the place of honor at the head of the long string of gas-powered vehicles was the machine built by Charles H. Black which was made in Indianapolis and believed by many to be the first automobile built in America. The procession greatly helped to demonstrate the vast improvements made in automobile construction during the last twenty years. Local automobile dealers originated “Used Car Week.”
