• Irvington Prep Academy students recently participated in weeding and cleaning up Irving Circle, which is right around the corner from their school. Irvington movers and shakers, including Sue Beecher and Dawn Briggs, organized the afternoon with the school and the kids. A big round of applause for the school and the kids for getting involved in making their corner of the world a better place.
• There was a great turnout for a fledgling Crime Watch in the Little Flower area. Residents of the neighborhood met with Diane Moorman of IMPD, and lots of great information was exchanged. Folks interested in making Little Flower an even better community are encouraged to come to the neighborhood association meeting May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Little Flower School cafeteria (use Door D), 1401 N. Bosart.
• Working alongside Jeff Echols and Laura Hildreth at the Irvington Green Initiative/Irvington Development Organization booth at Celebrate Irvington was great fun. If you’re not familiar with the Irvington Green Initiative, they host a Green Hour on the third Tuesday of the month at Black Acre Brewing Company, featuring speakers on a variety of eco-friendly topics.
• Giselda Cortez will be honored May 24 as Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana’s Achiever of the Year. The award is presented to honor an outstanding employee who has overcome significant barriers to employment. She works at the Lawrence Goodwill store, cleaning dressing rooms, helping customers, and translating for Spanish-speaking customers.
• The John H. Boner Community Center will hold its annual meeting and a room dedication to Doug Roof, the former director, on May 21 at 4 p.m. at the Center, 2236 E. 10th St. There will be a lot of celebrating of important milestones for the center, and the community. • The Beech Grove Mainstreet Project is progressing nicely. Main Street is now open to traffic from 13th to 8th streets. Work outside the roadway hasn’t been completed yet, and parking may still be an issue. To access the businesses in the affected area, please use the alleys north and south of Main St.
• The City of Lawrence will have a Wedding Day on June 1. Mayor Dean Jessup will perform vow renewals and marriage ceremonies at the Sterrett Center to benefit the American Cancer Society, beginning at 10 a.m. The cost is $50 for marriages (must have license issued by the Marion County Clerk), and $20 for renewals. The donation includes a decorated setting, small wedding cakes and punch, and a 4 x 6 photo. RSVP to the Mayor’s office at 545-6191 or e-mail kspiker@cityoflawrence.org.
• There will be a Community Day at Oaklandon at the Crossing Multi-Service Center on June 1 from noon-5 p.m. The service center is located at 6701 Oaklandon Rd.
• The Irvington Historic Home Tour Poster Contest deadline has been EXTENDED to May 28. This is the 40th Anniversary of the Home Tour featuring and supporting the Historic Benton House. Artists, you have an extra week to get it your poster finished. There will be prizes! Entry form and details on pg. A9
