• Congratulations to our very own Paula Nicewanger, who was recently named Tech High School Alumni of the Year! We already knew she was pretty awesome, so it’s nice to see other people acknowledge it as well. Way to go!
• One of the biggest antiques events in Indy will be this weekend. The Indianapolis Antique Festival will be held April 8-9 (Sat. 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sun. 10 a.m.-4 p.m.) at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in the Ag/Hort Building. Tickets are only $8 for both days. If you want items appraised, there is a $5 fee per item (limit 3 items per request), and proceeds go to support the Wounded Warrior Project. There are lots of great vendors at this show, don’t miss it!
• First Friday is upon us, and there are some great art shows at the Harrison Center (16th and Delaware), Circle City Industrial Complex (1125 Brookside), and other places throughout the city. Check out the Oddities Art Show at the 5547 Project, 5547 Bonna Ave. in Irvington for several artists in jewelry, furniture, and more. There will also be live music.
• The east side has the coolest City-County Councillors! Join Blake Johnson for Karaoke at the Shi-Kay Lounge, 1514 N. Emerson, April 13 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for a fundraiser (suggested contributions $25 and up). No guarantee that Blake will be up there doing his rendition of “Wind Beneath My Wings,” but you never know.
• Author Carol Sissom is organizing a Classic Car, Truck and Kike Show for April 29 at Beck’s Service Center, 6025 Madison Ave. (Madison and Edgewood) in memory of Roxie Caldwell. There will be a competition for best Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Plymouth, Corvette, and Mustang. Registration is only $15 from 9 a.m.-noon, with judging at 1 p.m. Call Carol at 317-938-5403 to pre-register.
• Community Heights will hold its neighborhood meetingi April 11 at 7 p.m. at Arlington Heights Baptist Church, 5630 E. 16th St. Dan Forestal, IMPD East District Commander, and Blake Johnson are slated as guests. Food pantry items are welcome and will be donated to Linwood Christian Church. All residents of Community Heights (10th to 21st, Arlington-Emerson) are welcome.
• With roadworks beginning as the weather warms, INDOT wants everyone to watch out for highway workers and to obey reduced speed limits in work zones. Penalties for speeding in a work zone can be up to $1,000, $5,000 for driving recklessly, and up to $10,000 for killing or injuring a highway worker. They are also reminding everyone that distracted driving is dangerous — texting, talking, or Facebooking on your phone is a major cause of accidents.
• T.C, Howe will be holding their Second Annual Community Day April 8 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the North Gym at the school, 4900 Julian Ave. Connect with fellow Hornets and find out how you can help the school.
