From The Indianapolis Star, Sunday, December 17, 1916: The executive committee of the Thomas Clark branch, Friends of Irish Freedom, last night adopted a resolution protesting against the deportation of more than 12,000 able-bodied Irish men from Ireland to England “where they are compelled to work in British army camps and munition factories without pay or recompense.” The action was taken after the Indianapolis branch received alarming reports on the deportations and setting forth conditions existing in Ireland bordering on famine owing to the war and the seizure of Irish foodstuffs by the British government. The resolution was signed by Daniel Foley, president of the local branch, and other officers and members. Copies of the resolution were sent to Indiana U. S. Senators John W. Kern and James E. Watson and Indianapolis U. S. Congressman Merrill Moores.
