From The Indianapolis News, Monday, December 18, 1916: Kris Kringle will have $300,000 (2015: $6,592,222) to spend for Christmas cheer because of the Christmas savings clubs at Indianapolis banks. Deposits ranged from $12.50 to $250 (2015: $275 to $5,494). Cards resembling the usual Christmas cards, signed by the cashiers of the banks, are being sent to club members to be cashed for the amount deposited in the Christmas savings fund. While most of the money is spent for Christmas, a portion is redeposited with the banks as a nucleus for other savings accounts. A purpose of the Christmas clubs is to encourage the habit of systematic weekly saving. Many of the city’s poor have made deposits as low as 1 cent (2015: 22ȼ) a week to the Dime Savings and Loan Association Christmas accounts, operated by the Charity Organization Society.
