From The Indianapolis Star, Sunday, September 10, 1916: Thousands of shoppers lined the downtown streets yesterday to watch the 1,700 crack troops of the Seventy-first Regiment, New York National Guard march and counter-march with all the perfect precision of regulars as they spent two hours in the downtown district during a stop on the way from the Mexican border to the mobilization camp in New York. Cheers greeted the soldiers and the regimental music of fifes and drums and of the buglers caused much applause from the spectators. Three special trains on the Big Four railroad carrying the men arrived minutes apart at Union Station. The cars were picturesque with the decorations formed by equipment and banners and pennants from the towns through which the regiment has traveled on its return trip. Green cans of tobacco predominated the color scheme.
