From The Indianapolis News, Wednesday, May 17, 1916: The University Club Company, made up of ninety-one college-bred men representing the best of the professional and business life of Indianapolis, appeared for its first instruction in military drill at the Armory, 410 N. Capital Av. U. S. Army Captain John J. Toffey gave the orders, and the seriousness with which the men accepted and executed them spoke volumes for their patriotism. Intricate movements were laid aside and only the simplest of instructions were given, but at every command the men responded with a willingness and precision of a well drilled company. “Men of culture, refinement and education learn to drill easily,” said Capt. Toffey. Well over 100 men are expected to “fall-in” at the next semi-weekly hourly drill. Drills will continue for the next six weeks until the training camps begin.
