INDIANAPOLIS — Starting on July 1, 2025, the speed limit on I-465 will increase from 55 mph to 65 mph, thanks to an exception in the state’s highway speed limit that was added to a road funding bill..
A 2023 study by AAA found that increasing highway speeds often led to more fatalities and hundreds more injuries and crashes. It did result in fewer people ticketed for speeding, but did little to improve drive times or traffic volume.
On some sections of I-465, the speed limit could be much lower, as INDOT explores using variable speed limits on the southeast side and ramp metering, which tends to slow traffic speeds down.
