INDIANAPOLIS — The Fountain Square Neighborhood Association secured tactical urbanism grants from the city in December, 2024 and will be implementing them beginning in April. The barriers will be removed in mid-October.
The tactical urbanism project spearheaded by the Community Heights Neighborhood Association in 2023 was very successful in slowing traffic and reducing accidents. The results of the project have led the city to start working on a redesign of East 10th from Emerson to Arlington to add bike lanes and improve safety, as well as slow traffic.
Temporary water barriers will be used to close off the south lane of the Calvary Street bridge between Virginia Avenue and Fletcher Avenue. The barriers will help give more space between cars and pedestrians using the sidewalk.
Apart from the protected sidewalk on Calvary Street, the barriers will also be used to create makeshift “bump-outs” on nearby McCarty Street.
The city and neighborhood will use vehicle speed data and pedestrian/bicyclist volume to measure the project’s effectiveness.
