INDIANAPOLIS — Recently, city leaders and developers unveiled the first phase of redevelopment of the City Market campus. Construction will focus on the west side near Market and Delaware streets.
The plans include transforming the Gold Building on Delaware in to a 20-story apartment complex with 354 units. The building is currently vacant. The West Plaza and historic Catacombs on E. Market will include green space and outdoor seating, as well as historical plaques. The catacombs will be restored and exposed as part of the plaza. They once served as the foundation to Thomlinson Hall before the historic building burned down in 1958.
To create the plaza, the city will need to tear down The Platform building near the corner of Market and Delaware streets. Officials noted that the demolition will happen in early 2025.
The city is also working with Indiana Landmarks to ensure the history of the market campus is honored throughout the redevelopment process and that the catacombs are preserved.
Developers also plan to complete a $30 million upgrade to the 11-story office building at 251 E. Ohio St. and a $12 million overhaul of the nearby parking garage. Wabash Alley will then be converted into a pedestrian pathway between Delaware and Alabama streets.
Phase 2 of the plan will include the restoration of the City Market house with new vendors and private ownership.
