INDIANAPOLIS — A recent data breach from National Public Data may have exposed 2.9 billion Americans, including names, addresses, and Social Security numbers. Identity theft experts are concerned that some Web sites that claim they can identify if you are a victim of the data breach may actually be scams.
According to CNBC, there are a few reputable Web sites that will allow you to check your status without giving out your Social Security number.
• NPD.pentester.com only needs first and last name, state, and year of birth.
• NPDBreach.com uses full name and zip code, and phone number.
Check credit scores at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion for unusual activity, and if your bank or credit union has a LifeLock fraud detection feature, use it.
