INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Landmarks is launching several new outdoor walking tours in some of the Circle City’s oldest historic districts and charming historic neighborhoods. Led by expert guides, tourgoers will explore little-known Indianapolis history, hear tales of memorable and influential historic characters and learn about each neighborhood’s distinctive architecture.
New walking tours offered select Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. this summer include:
• Chatham Arch Neighborhood Walking Tour, August 10. As Indianapolis grew beyond its original Mile Square in the mid-nineteenth century, Chatham Arch, just off bustling Mass. Ave, developed into a thriving neighborhood of modest cottages, grander homes, apartments, churches, and commercial buildings that is still desirable today.
• Herron-Morton Place Neighborhood Walking Tour, June 1 & September 14. The evolution and history of Herron-Morton Place spans an impressive 160 years from its time serving as a Civil War camp to its unique role in later decades as a hub of LGBTQ+ life and culture for the city.
• Old Northside Neighborhood Walking Tour, July 20. One of the city’s best examples of historic preservation, the tree-lined streets of the Old Northside Historic District were originally home to business rivals, publishing magnates, and influential women who formed a fashionable and enduring community in the late nineteenth century.
• White River State Park Walking Tour, July 13, July 27, August 3 & August 17. Once an early center of transportation and industry for the city, White River State Park’s historic landmarks, including the 1916 Washington Street bridge, 1870 pumphouse and Central Canal, tell the story of Indianapolis.
• Indy’s Notable & Notorious Walking Tour, September 25. Discover Indianapolis through tales of some of the city’s most memorable characters, ranking your favorites tournament-style to reveal your choice for Indianapolis’s most notable — or notorious — historical figure.
Ticket costs for Indiana Landmarks’ Saturday walking tours range from $10 to $20, with discounts for Indiana Landmarks members, youth and children. Advance ticket purchase is encouraged.
