Bridge Projects Announced for 2024

INDIANAPOLIS — City officials recently highlighted bridge projects going into construction in 2024. Indy DPW has completed 49 bridge projects over the last five years and has 14 more projects scheduled for construction in 2024, equaling an investment of more than $170 million to enhance infrastructure and connectivity across the county.
One of the largest projects is the upcoming rehabilitation of the historic 16th Street Bridge over the White River. It is one of the few local routes over the White River and sees a lot of vehicle traffic. The project will cost $17.5 million and is expected to begin in late 2024 with the contractor patching the arch rings underneath the bridge. A full closure of the bridge is expected in mid-2025 and is anticipated to last approximately two years. Pedestrian access to the bridge will be maintained throughout the project duration. The timing of the full closure is being coordinated alongside ongoing work on the 30th Street Bridge over White River. The bridge deck will be completely replaced, sidewalks will be reconstructed, and arch rings repaired. The bridge had been previously rehabilitated in 2011.
Other bridge projects currently in construction or expected to go into construction in 2024 include Emerson Ave. over Pogue’s Run, 16th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street over the Canal, Union Station Bridge Rehabilitation, Acton Road over Maze Creek, and Westfield Boulevard over the Canal.
