INDIANAPOLIS — Glendale will reopen on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at its new location at 3660 East 62nd Street, the former site of John Strange Elementary School. A grand opening celebration will kick off at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and live entertainment for all ages. Entertainment will include live music from The Embers, a local band from the Glendale neighborhood, Paws to Read dog visits, Silly Safaris Animal Meet and Greets, and Cinamon the Clown.
When it opens, patrons will discover enhanced services, including improved access to computers and new technologies, group study rooms and tutoring spaces, and a community meeting room with a capacity of 100. The Glendale Branch has the second-largest collection of physical materials within IndyPL, after Central Library, including various titles in Spanish, French, Korean, and a collection of Braille books.
There are beautiful pieces of stained glass in a large study room and the quiet adult reading area at The Glendale Branch. All of these pieces of glass had previously been at the Glendale Branch that was at the Glendale Town Center.
The Glendale Branch has solar panels on the roof. The solar panels generate enough energy to cover 71% of the Glendale Branch’s energy costs.
Since 1930, the Broad Ripple area has had a library branch, but with the rapid expansion of the community, the library had to move into larger facilities, including next to School No. 80 in 1949 and Broad Ripple Park in 1986. The Glendale Branch opened in the Glendale shopping center in 2000, and was the first full-service library in a major shopping mall in the country.
