• The work of the late Gene Deer will be celebrated by WFYI Public Radio on their The Blues House Party program on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. Deer passed away suddenly on Friday, Jan. 6. He was a regular on the local blues scene and a frequent player at the Irving Theater and other venues.
• Congratulations to Councillor Ali Brown, who  represents Lawrence in the 5th District, who was named Vice-President of the City-County Council.
• Gaze into the Future with Crossroads Dance Indy as the company premieres four new dance works created by local choreographers exploring the concept of creating and responding to our futures. Join CDI at Arts for Lawrence’s Theater at the Fort for their third annual evening-length performances on Jan. 26 and 27 at 7 p.m. and January 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15-$20 and available online at artsforlawrence.org,  The Theater at the Fort is located at  8920 Otis Ave. in Lawrence.
• All Indianapolis Public Library branches will be closed Monday, Jan. 15 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, except the InfoZone, which will be open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
• The IRT Theatre Camp registration opens on Monday, Jan. 29. The organization has several camps for actors ages 5-15, and one-day workshops for high school students. If you have a budding performer in the house, visit irtlive.com for more information about these camps, slated for June.
• Market Vintage, located on S. Johnson Ave., is holding their annual vision board workshop on Wednesday, Jan. 17 from 6-8 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come in to create vision boards for their own futures. Materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own collage items.
• Crown Hill Cemetery’s Speaker Series continues on  Thursday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Gothic Chapel at Crown Hill. The topic will be “A Grave Matter in Indiana” and will discus cemetery symbolism. Jeanniei Regan-Dinuis, the director of historic preservation for Crown Hill, will discuss the meanings of the most common symbols found on tombstones. • Garfield Park’s Vintage Movie Night continues on Friday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. with The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) starring Errol Flynn. Hosted by Eric Grayson, this is a great family event. Admission is $5 at the door.
• Volunteers from AARP offer a tax assistance program for seniors in Lawrence, beginning on Feb. 9 at the Fort Ben Library, 9330 E. 56th St. (new location). You need an appointment to take advantage of this free program; visit the library in person beginning Monday, Jan. 22 to make an appointment and pick up your tax prep packet.
