From The Indianapolis Times, Monday, December 17, 1923: For the first time in Marion County court history the expression, “Ladies and gentlemen of the jury,” may be heard next month. Judge Theophilus J. Moll, Superior Court, Room 5, today ordered the jury commissioners to draw twelve jurors for the regular panel and eighteen additional potential jurors for the January term of the court. Judge Moll added, “Of this jury let there be a substantial number of women who are legally qualified to act as jurors.” He also ordered the county commissioners to provide suitable quarters in the Courthouse for a mixed jury. At present, there are no names of women in the box from which names of prospective jurors are drawn and the commissioners must get an order from the circuit court judge who has charge of the jury commissioners.
