From The Indianapolis Star, Friday, August 11, 1922: One of the greatest gatherings of swimming stars to assemble in the United States opened the three-day national swimming meet at the Broad Ripple Park pool yesterday with a crowd of spectators filling the grand stand and encircling the west end of the huge pool. Conditions were ideal for high grade performances and Johnny Weissmuller, the “speed king” of all swimmers, responded to the crowd’s expectations, breaking one world record, and almost equaling another which he holds. The boyish looking and acting Weissmuller gave a convincing demonstration of why he is the “world’s fastest swimmer,” and at the finish he received a round of cheers from the crowd. Helen Wainwright, of the New York Women’s Swimming Association, showed the way in the fifty-yard free style, closely pressed by local star Euphrasia Donnelly.
